    Let the post-season begin: Playoffs start Tuesday

    Playoffs begin Tuesday for Friday Harbor prep sports. The boys soccer team, which finished the regular season 1-2-8 with a 0-0 finish vs. Cavelero on Thursday, will travel to Lynden Christian on Tuesday for a District 1 playoff game. A loss would end their season; if they win, they advance Thursday to Meridian.

    Friday Harbor Town Council member Carrie Lacher announced today her candidacy for mayor of Friday Harbor. If elected, she would be the first female mayor since the town was incorporated in 1909. She is the first candidate to announce for the position this year; Mayor David Jones told The Journal April 22 that he will not seek a second term.

    Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army’s defeat of French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Tuesday, it celebrates a hopeful victory over another foe. Island Group Sotheby’s will serve food and beverages at Haley’s on Cinco de Mayo to raise money for Relay for Life. Tip big between 6 and 9 p.m. — all tips will be donated to Relay for Life.

    Patricia Barrett Harrah of Cape San Juan passed away peacefully at home April 22 with her husband at her side, after a long struggle with kidney disease. She had just passed her 82nd birthday and she and Bill celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary last year.

    Bob Dann of Friday Harbor, a retired chemist who taught ethnic dance and wrote six novels, has died. Mr. Dann was 87. Funeral is at noon on May 8 at St. David’s Church, followed by a brief reception and then interment at Valley Cemetery.

    San Juan County Health Department: Swine flu case...

    The county Health Department is prepared to close a school for a minimum of seven days if a student or staff member is confirmed to have the H1N1 virus, or swine flu. School district Superintendent Michael Soltman said today that the district has been working closely with the health department and the Department of Emergency Management to develop procedures for communicating information about response to student illness and potential school closures ordered by the health department.

    Camp Orkila on Orcas Island is being closed and about 300 school children from King County and Richland are being sent home after six children and one adult exhibited flu-like symptoms Thursday night, the San Juan County Health Department reports. County Health and Human Services Director John Manning reported that 267 of the children arrived from the Tyee Middle School in Bellevue on Tuesday evening and another 36 of the children are from the Christ the King School in Richland. The children from the Richland area are leaving via the 10:20 a.m. ferry. At this point, health officials say none of the Richland-area children have exhibited symptoms.

    A memorial service will be held May 7, 2 p.m., at the Church of the Nazarene in Lynden for Erika Jean Coffey, granddaughter of the late Clyde and Ruth Sundstrom, who was killed in a vehicle collision April 24 in Florida. She was 29.

    Two days earlier, Stanwood ended the Dragons’ five-game winning streak in Friday Harbor 7-6, forcing a three-way tie for second in the Division II Skagit Conference and putting the Dragons on a precarious path to the playoffs. But Saturday, the Dragons shook off the loss and defeated Lynnwood 10-9 at home.
