Arielle Mancuso, Friday Harbor High School Class of 2005, graduates this month from McGill University in Montreal with an honors degree in International Development and a minor in Biochemistry. She is a candidate for the Peace Corps and hopes to work in French-speaking Africa.
For National Historic Preservation Month, I decided to review David Richardson’s history. As I sat to write up my thoughts about it, I was also thinking about the impact of the recent “Every 15 Minutes” program to reduce drinking and driving. So I dedicate this review to the many lives of islanders lost or maimed due to alcohol abuse.
Actor and activist Raul Julia-Levy (“The Champagne Game,” “Clash,” “Vengeance” will give an update on his work with the “Free Lolita” campaign at The Whale Museum’s third annual “Celebration of the Orca Greeting Ceremony,” Saturday at Mullis Community Senior Center. The fund-raising dinner and auction begins at 6 p.m.
The San Juan Islands Museum of Art will open its doors at 28 First St., on May 29 with Shaun Peterson’s new work entitled, “Keeper of the tide.” A reception with the artist is scheduled at 5 p.m.
Since 1996, Mike Vouri has given George Pickett the opportunity to give his version of the events of his life in a one-man show, “The Life & Times of George E. Pickett.” The production has been staged throughout the U.S., including before the annual meeting of The Pickett Society in Virginia. But now, after the longest run in the San Juan Community Theatre’s history, the show is being retired. “Pickett” will be staged for the last time May 23 and July 10 at SJCT.
If you enjoy spending time in the woods and want to pursue a new hobby, disc golf may be for you. Disc golf is a world-wide leisure sport that appeals to people of all ages and all athletic abilities. Participants will have the opportunity to explore the new Roche Harbor Disc Golf Course and learn all there is to know about this sport.
Jordyn Taylor, a senior at Friday Harbor High School, will golf for Western Washington University in fall. Taylor has competed in state tournaments as a Wolverine golfer and wrestler.
Early registrations are up 21 percent for the King’s San Juan Island Marathon and Half Marathon. “Traditionally, most of the registrations come in four weeks prior to the race, with a surge of day-before registrations at the expo,” race co-director Paul Hopkins said. “So, we’re very pleased with these early numbers and hope the trend continues.”
The San Juan Island Outrigger Canoe and Kayak Club presents a race series at Jackson Beach on the first and third Tuesdays of every month from May to August. Canoeists, kayakers and rowers will take off from the net shed at Jackson Beach and race around Dinner Island. Every race is sponsored by a different local restaurant, and each week racers have a chance to win a gift certificate to that restaurant.
Four players advanced as the Wolverines made the most out of home court advantage and nearly ran the tables at the District 1 playoff Saturday in Friday Harbor.
The San Juan Dragons defeated Whatcom 13-6 at home Saturday to clinch second place in WHSBLA Division II and advance to the playoffs for the second consecutive year. Boys Division I and II state quarterfinal play gets under way May 21. The 31st boys state championships take place May 30 at Memorial Stadium near the Seattle Center.
Washington state’s Superior Court judges elected Judge John O. Linde secretary of the Superior Court Judges’ Association at the annual spring conference this month. As treasurer, Linde will serve on the Board of Trustees, which represents 188 Superior Court judges through the state who are members of the state organization.
Arlene Rhonwen Forgie passed away May 8, 2009 in Friday Harbor, Wash., with her daughters and granddaughters by her side. Arlene was born to Leslie and Alice Cannon and raised in Victoria, B.C. Canada. In 1959, Arlene married Hugh Douglas Forgie. They were married until 1991. They raised three children together.
