Friday Harbor sophomore Megan Cuomo placed sixth among girls at the 1A State Golf Tournament at Columbia Point Golf Course in Richland. The Wolverines finished fifth overall. All five Friday Harbor golfers made the cut at the 1A State Golf Tournament today, at Columbia Point Golf Course in Richland. Senior Dustin Howard, in his first year as a Wolverine golfer, led his team members with a 2-over 74. Tyler McKee shot 75, Tri-District champion Jordyn Taylor shot 78, Cody Price shot 79, and Megan Cuomo shot 88.
James Van Dyke has been named executive chef at Pink Sands Resort, Harbour Island, Bahamas. Van Dyke is the son of Jeff Van Dyke of Friday Harbor and Molly Read of Kirkland. He graduated from Oak Harbor High School in 2003. He attended culinary school in Portland, Ore., graduating in November 2005, and mentored under Chef Chris Nugent at Les Nomades in Chicago, Ill. Prior to moving to the Bahamas, Van Dyke was the chef de cuisine for Coobah’s in Chicago.
Memorial Day belongs to the fallen. It is for them we mourn and for them that we search our hearts for that deeper meaning that is never fully satisfied. Those of us who have been on the point of our nation’s interests know this.
Friday Harbor’s Kayla Short came up big when it mattered most. A junior and three-sport athlete, Short earned the right to compete at State in not just one, but two events thanks to a pair of fourth-place finishes Saturday at the Tri-District meet at King’s High School.
Our beloved mother and grandmother Lola D. Risbell, Aug. 16, 1927 – May 23, 2009, fought a brave and courageous battle against cancer. She fought it with dignity and grace and is at peace now.

The Lions Health Screening Unit will visit San Juan Island on Friday and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day at MarketPlace. The purpose is to screen the public for vision and hearing acuity, glaucoma and diabetes detection, and blood pressure screening. Sponsored by the San Juan Lions Club, these screenings are available free of charge. The screening unit is a program of the Northwest Lions Foundation for Sight & Hearing, a 501©(3) charitable non-profit organization founded in 1969 by Lions Clubs in the Northwest.
