After six months of negotiations, the San Juan County Council has signed a four-year contract with Local 49 of the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees. The contract gives the represented employees a 1.25 percent cost of living increase, retroactive to January 2009, and another 1.25 percent increase effective July 1. The contract sets cost of living increases at 3 percent for the remaining three years of the contract.

Alex H. McRea of Friday Harbor died before midnight June 7, 2009.
He was 92. There will be a memorial service June 19, 1:30 p.m., in Friday Harbor Presbyterian Church, followed by private family burial.
On behalf of patients in our community’s hospitals, I wish to extend our thanks. During your blood drive on June 3, Puget Sound Blood Center registered 85 donors and collected 76 units of blood. This will benefit up to 228 patients.
Each month, volunteer pilots from Angel Flight West fly patients needing specialized medical care, including chemotherapy and dialysis, to hospitals throughout Washington. Many of these patients are from rural areas and would otherwise be hard-pressed to receive the care they need.

I have served as one of nine appointed members of the GMA Critical Area Ordinance review committee for two years. A polarizing and contentious issue during this entire process has been whether the committee should address the shorelines.
I had the pleasure of meeting Alex and Margaret McRea three years ago when he was a patient at San Juan Physical Therapy. Two things stood out from that initial encounter: The first was that, after 60 plus years of marriage, they were as courteous and solicitous of each other as a couple on a first date. The second was the sense of purpose and determination that Alex exhibited throughout his therapy. (He was a mere pup of 91 at the time).
The dearth of candidates in any election is no more dire, and no more persistent, than on Stuart Island. Two of three members of the island’s cemetery district commission have moved off-island. The term of the commission’s senior member, David W. Ericksen, is poised to be automatically extended because no one, including him, filed as a candidate. He didn’t run for reelection after his last six-year term expired and, lacking candidates, his term has been automatically extended each year.
