At one time, the Best Available Science told us only that the earth was flat and that it rotated around the sun. This was based on limited observations without correct scientific study. Unfortunately, we have a similar situation facing San Juan County today. It is of the utmost importance that as legislators you maintain the independence of science from policy pressures. This is the only way to ensure legitimacy and quality of science.
In his Aug. 5 letter, John Boyd suggested that I “turn myself in” and that I apologize to Kari Koski (and everyone who volunteers for Soundwatch) for making the point that Koski, in her role as Soundwatch spokesperson, serves as an echo chamber for the whale-watch industry. To Koski, I would say, if you’re going to act as a spokesperson and be quoted in the newspaper on public policy issues, you have to be ready for people to disagree with you.

On Sunday, July 26, our beloved son, Paul Jaholkowski, was tragically killed after being hit by a car on Lopez Island. We would like to thank all the thoughtful people of your community for all the kind cards, e-mails and phone calls we received.

The remains of a man found floating in the water near Sucia Island May 23 lie in the Snohomish County Medical Examiner’s Office at Paine Field, awaiting identification. Authorities are asking for the public’s help in obtaining information that will help identify him.
