I am aware of the ongoing debates about the orcas and the boat traffic. It sounds like the whole thing is escalating rapidly. The Friday Harbor Town Council will have two special meetings — one today and one on Tuesday. Both meetings are open to the public. Today’s meeting begins at noon in the Town Council Chambers in Town Hall. The council will hear a presentation by URS Corporation regarding structural stability analysis of the Trout Lake Dam.
But this is only a beginning. Whether on island or the mainland, we should always ask for to-go containers made from compostable or recyclable materials. We should always seek to reduce the packaging that comes into our lives when we shop. “Reduce, reuse, recycle” must be our mantra.
If we really want to save the whales, we should be focusing our efforts on these issues rather than perceived notions and unproven claims based on an organization’s agenda that will have little or no impact.
More than half of the entries in this year’s Concours d’ Elegance are British automobiles, among them an Aston Martin Vanguard. But you’ll also see antique autos, special-interest cars, and an all-electric Tesla sports car at the event. Concours d’Elegance is a fund-raiser for the Family Resource Center, the San Juan Island Public Schools Foundation and the Rotary International Polio Eradication Project. On Aug. 30, Islands Convalescent Center and Friday Harbor Drug will sponsor an Alzheimer’s Walk to raise awareness and educate our community about the disease and its effects. The walk begins at Mullis Community Senior Center. In conjunction with the walk, nationally known Alzheimer’s educator and occupational therapist Teepa Snow will present an interactive program about understanding dementia and learning to manage behavior that can be both mystifying and frustrating.
