A huge “thank you” to so many who made the fundraiser for Greg Sawyer so successful! Well over $17,000 was raised to help defray medical expenses, and it was heartwarming to see so many in our community come together to support Mr. Sawyer.

How about our president being selected for the Nobel Prize? I don’t really expect anyone to understand the special inner glow I feel about this and all other honors and respect being shown these days for black people! Each time something like this happens, I feel a surge of pride and gratitude as real as if the honoree was one of my kids!

Ask the County Council to fully fund 4-H

The recession means that things are tight across the economy. Families are concerned. Seniors are concerned. Home values are down. Local tax receipts are down. County revenues from fees are down. The County Council, like many families, has had to reduce expenses to balance the budget. One area that should not be cut is the support for the county’s 4-H program.

Supports Island Rec levy and county Proposition 1: ‘Directly affecting the quality of life which we value’
Supports Island Rec levy and county Proposition 1:...

I strongly support both the San Juan County Proposition 1 levy and the Island Rec levy. As islanders, we share laughter, as well as arguments, but we all care deeply about each other and our islands. I feel both these levies represent a broad consensus to support our children, youth, senior citizens and other programs which directly affect the quality of life which we value.

The following letter was written by my son, Otto, and posted at our local bulletin board on Shaw Island last spring. He collected more than $400 for Friday Harbor High School’s athletic program from our community for his sponsored run from Friday Harbor to Roche Harbor and back.

This is not a “blank check.” We should continue to pressure the County Council to make more responsible financial decisions. There will be a group of freeholders elected next year to review our home rule charter. I expect there will be further changes proposed for the charter that will provide for lower costs in the administrative area.

When I came to Friday Harbor last fall, I was eager to understand the issues facing the town and got hooked on watching the Town Council meetings on public access cable TV. My first impression of Carrie Lacher was that she is articulate and knowledgeable when discussing the many complex issues facing the town.

I am writing in support of Carrie Lacher for mayor of Friday Harbor.
For many years, I lived in town in senior housing with my mother. This apartment complex is not far from where Carrie herself lives in an affordable-housing neighborhood. Over the years I have known Carrie, I have come to appreciate her passion for town living and her commitment to those who often feel marginalized or overwhelmed by government.

At Fitch’s request, his daughter Stephanie Shippen, described the experience in an email to share with people who have not yet seen the effect swine flu can have on young children. Here is her description of how the disease progressed.
