Friday Harbor could soon have a new sister city — Shetland Islands, Scotland. A visit from Mark Burgess, a member of the Scalloway Community Council in the Shetland Islands, sparked a correspondence between Friday Harbor Mayor Carrie Lacher and Alexander J. Cluness, convener of the Shetland Islands Council (convenor is the equivalent of mayor). That led to an exchange of information about their respective communities, and now Lacher’s formal invitation to establish a sister city relationship.
Bison Gallery has moved from 65 Nichols St. to 60 First St., the space formerly occupied by Garuda & I. Meanwhile, Compost It is moving next door from 115 Nichols St. to the space vacated by Bison Gallery.
The St. Patrick’s Day Skeeter Scramble golf tournament is March 13, beginning at 11:30 a.m., at San Juan Golf and Country Club. The tournament is sponsored by Mosquito Fleet Mercantile.

There are two candidates for one position on the San Juan Islands Conservation District Board of Supervisors: Ed Kilduff, an environmental planner and geologist, as well as member of the San Juan County Solid Waste Advisory Committee; and Henning Sehmsdorf, owner and operator of S&S Homestead Farm, and incumbent district supervisor.
Rich Peterson announced Sunday he will seek a second term as San Juan County Council member from the Second District, South San Juan. “He is hopeful that he has earned the trust of voters in the Second District and their support for his re-election,” he said in a press release.

The 2010 Census has begun. Census enumerators began delivery of 2010 census forms to Lopez, Shaw and the outer islands Wednesday. General mailing of 2010 census forms to all island mailing addresses begins March 15.
Contestants who sign up on the site can take a stab at guessing the winners of some of the top Oscar categories, including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Actress and more. The winner takes home an 18-DVD set of past Best Picture winners.
