Army Sgt. Tom Bauschke of Friday Harbor has received the Bronze Star for “Valorous and Meritorious actions while engaged in direct combat operations in support of Operation Enduring Freedom on 1 May 2009.”

Friday Harbor is withdrawing “for the time being” its offer to sell the Sutton Road site to the county and may terminate its solid waste transfer station lease in 2014, according to a letter approved and signed Tuesday by the mayor and Town Council.
San Juan County Superior Court Judge Donald E. Eaton was sworn in as San Juan County’s second-ever Superior Court judge on March 19, in a private ceremony conducted in Eaton’s chambers by Island County Superior Court Judge Alan R. Hancock. A public ceremony will be held at a later date.

Albert Nash died peacefully at home on Monday morning, March 29, 2010. Albert lived most of his 86 years in Friday Harbor where he was born, the second child of Albert M. Nash Sr. and Margaret McSorley Nash. His brothers, Charles and Kenneth, preceded him in death. His sister, Catherine Herdt, lives in Mount Vernon with her husband, Gary.
With authorities closing in on teen burglary suspect Colton Harris-Moore, local prosecutors have begun considering what penalties they will pursue should he be brought to trial and convicted. The Prosecuting Attorney’s office would not comment on the considerations. The Gerbil studied sentences for similar crimes to determine the likely outcome.
Island Rec has partnered with the San Juan Island School District to fund school sports. Now, Island Rec is stepping in to help rescue another beleaguered program. Island Rec will soon take over the Derelict Vessel Removal Program in San Juan County. It will become Island Rec’s 1,275th program in its ever-expanding schedule.

A cell phone service will apply for town lodging tax money to build a new cell tower in Friday Harbor. The spin? The cell tower will feature a bungee-jumping platform. The service believes bungee jumping will be a tourism draw and will satisfy state law requiring that lodging tax revenue be used only for “tourism-related facilities.”

Johnson, mother of the island’s first Baby of the Year, Elijah Matthew Johnson, on Jan. 14, reports that the baby is fine and she has now returned to the salon. She has more than five years of experience as a cosmetician.
Kris Lytton has scheduled the formal kick-off of her campaign for a seat in the state House of Representatives for April 12, 5-7 p.m., at Gere-a-Deli, 502 Commercial Ave., in Anacortes. Supporters Duncan Frazier and Wallie Funk, both former editor/publishers of the Anacortes American, are sponsoring the event, which will feature light food and drink, along with a no-host bar.
