Friday Harbor Wolverines Quinn Bune, Megan Cuomo, William King, Taylor Molloy, Tyler McKee and Riley Rousar compete in the District golf tournament May 13 at North Bellingham. Twenty male golfers and eight female golfers will advance to the Tri-District tournament on May 18 at Eagles Pride in Tacoma. Construction of the Sewer Replacement Project is in its final phase near the Town Wastewater Treatment Plant. Local contractors hope to have all the work completed by the end of May. They began work at the Wastewater Treatment Plant and are proceeding up Tucker Avenue to Guard Street in front of the high school, and finally over to Culver Avenue.
My adrenaline surged as my back arched, restarting the back pain I have been fighting. I had just gotten out of my car as the dog I had not seen in the car next to me hit its window, fiercely barking! So surprised was I, that I wanted to cry! I felt angry and assaulted. Joy will reign at the annual Teddy Bear Picnic on May 16, noon to 2 p.m. in the Patio Garden of the San Juan Community Theatre. This is the annual free event for all San Juan children sponsored by the theater’s CATS organization. There will be face painting, crafts projects … and teddy bears. There will also be storytelling with Melina Lagios, youth services librarian at San Juan Island Library, accompanied by puppets.
The San Juan Islands Museum of Art & Sculpture Park (IMA) is sounding the call to Washington, Oregon and British Columbia artists to enter IMA’s juried visual arts competition, “Green: ON THE EDGE.” The upcoming summer exhibition asks artists to tackle the question, “What does green mean to you?” “ON THE EDGE” is IMA’s way of saying, “Don’t be conservative, take it to the edge. Two Republican candidates for 40th District state House of Representatives will visit Friday Harbor May 14 and May 21. Dusty Gulleson is running for position 1 held by retiring legislator Dave Quall, and was endorsed May 4 by state Attorney General Rob McKenna. Tom Pasma of Bow is the 40th District Democrats’ nominee. John Swapp is running for position 2 held by Rep. Jeff Morris, D-Mount Vernon. Bellingham businessman and legislative candidate Dusty Gulleson held a meet-and-greet May 4 at the American Legion Hall in Friday Harbor to introduce himself to San Juan County voters. The event featured Attorney General Rob McKenna, who introduced Gulleson and announced his endorsement of him.
Tom Pasma of Bow won a decisive majority (75 percent) of votes cast at 40th District Precinct Officers Nominating Convention Saturday in Anacortes. Pasma is now the official Democratic Party nominee for state House Position 1. Current state Rep. Dave Quall is retiring.
The San Juan Island International Documentary Film Festival will host its inaugural reception with Emmy award-winning filmmaker László Pal on May 23, 3 p.m. at the San Juan Island Yacht Club. “This festival will draw visitors from all over the world to our islands,” Pal said in a press release.
San Juan Island emergency services personnel and a U.S. Coast Guard search and rescue team conducted joint training in Friday Harbor on May 1. The exercise included practicing patient transfer procedures to and from an airborne helicopter, and simulating loading critically ill passengers and necessary equipment onto the helicopter.
