Cattle Point Lighthouse is endangered. Seven months ago, John M. Barberi of the Coast Guard’s waterway management projects office in Seattle had hoped to bring a work crew out to the landmark by June to fix the erosion that threatens the lighthouse’s foundation. The plan: Reinforce the foundation with sheet piles — driven piles of thin interlocking sheets of steel to obtain a continuous barrier in the ground — and concrete. But the erosion is beyond that remedy, Barberi said. The project has been referred to a Coast Guard civilian engineer in Oakland, Calif. who says that, if nothing were done, the lighthouse would last another two years.
Serial burglary suspect Colton Harris-Moore is now wanted in federal court. Harris-Moore has been charged in U.S. District Court in Seattle with interstate transportation of stolen property. Five law enforcement professionals want to be your next sheriff. The campaign is significant for these reasons: One, islanders will have a new sheriff for the first time in 24 years. Anyone alive since 1986 has known only Bill Cumming as the county’s top cop. Two, rarely has a single position on the San Juan County ballot generated so many candidates. All are colleagues with varied backgrounds. The field includes a past sheriff candidate, a retired police chief, a Town Council member, a county advisory board chairman, and the chairman of the prevention coalition.
The U.S. Embassy in the Bahamas issued this press release Tuesday regarding the FBI’s offer of $10,000 for information leading to the arrest of serial burglary suspect Colton Harris-Moore.
Authorities believe Harris-Moore, suspected of burglaries and thefts in several states and British Columbia, landed a stolen plane off Abaco Island and is in the Bahamas.
Local pilot Alan Dortch, at the beginning of the week the only candidate for appointment to Carrie Brooks’ position on the Friday Harbor Town Council, has withdrawn his application because he may move out of the town limits, Town Clerk Amy Taylor said Tuesday. That means there are no candidates. But Taylor expects that to change soon.
These are the winners of Roche Harbor’s various contests. Other results are expected and will be posted as received.
Cara Gresham has joined the San Juan Island Prevention Coalition as a summer graduate intern for 10 weeks. The San Juan Island Prevention Coalition was one of eight Drug-Free Community coalitions in the U.S. chosen to have a 10-week summer graduate intern funded by the federal government. There are currently 746 Drug-Free Communities in the U.S., with San Juan Island Prevention Coalition being the only Drug-Free Community mentoring coalition in Washington state.
Fourth of July started off with a couple of hitches. First, unseasonably cool weather. Second, a Montana driver heading up Spring Street came face to face with the beginning of the parade at Spring Street and Blair Avenue, and had to negotiate his vehicle out of the way of the parade and crowds. But then, with Ray Charles singing “America the Beautiful” over Pat O’Day’s sound system, a bald eagle flew high over Spring Street, seemingly setting the tone for the rest of the day. And San Juan Island’s celebration of the 234th anniversary of American independence began.
The July 4 Parade was great! We all had a lot of fun, but we have a serious problem. I am concerned about the safety of the children picking up candy during the parade. Big truck and fire truck drivers are very careful but they are unable to thoroughly monitor their rear wheels.
