I am saddened to hear that, once again, the rabbits at American Camp are under the gun — this time possibly literally. Our visits to the “bunny field” are a regular part of our island trips and we would miss being able to watch the interaction between the rabbits, raptors and foxes. We usually spend at least a half-hour enjoying these animals in their natural habitat.
The Washington Council of Police and Sheriffs (WACOPS) and the Law Enforcement Administrators of Washington (LAW) have endorsed U.S. Rep. Rick Larsen, D-Everett, for a sixth term in the U.S. House of Representatives. These endorsements come only a few weeks after Congressman Larsen received the endorsement of the Washington State Patrol Troopers Association.
A plane was photographed flying close to the water over an area where orcas were swimming, midday July 10 at Lime Kiln Point State Park.
Soundwatch coordinator Kari Koski estimates the plane flew, at its lowest point, 20 to 30 feet above the water. “This was dangerous for a couple of reasons,” Koski said.

County Council Chairman Richard Fralick reported last week that this county needs to cut $500,000 out of its budget next year. Luckily, I have a plan! The plan is getting rid of “Home Rule.”
Congratulations are in order for all fireworks lovers in San Juan County. Once again a Fourth of July celebration has proved that we can enjoy our traditional fireworks on the Fourth of July without serious personal injury or property damage, as the total lack of reported problems has once again proven to be true.
The Journal of the San Juan Islands asked the candidates for 40th District state House of Representatives, Position 2, the following questions: 1. Friday Harbor and San Juan County have cut staffing, reduced services, and implemented unpaid furloughs to balance their budgets. What new revenue sources are available to local governments? 2. In what ways can the state Legislature further reduce state spending, increase state revenues, and ensure adequate levels of public services? 3. Washington State Ferries has been beset by financial and management problems. What are your recommendations for solving those problems? 4. Education funding: What are your recommendations for ensuring the Legislature meets its constitutional obligation to adequately fund public education? 5. What would be your top three priorities as a state representative? Here are their answers.

Dancing to live music will be a new feature at this year’s “Wags to Riches,” July 25, hosted by the Friday Harbor Animal Shelter. This will be the sixth annual “Wags to Riches,” the shelter’s major fund-raising event of the year. It will again be held at the home of Bob and Lissa McDowell.
The tone of Island Stage Left’s summer production will differ this year. Far from the fun and frolic-filled “As You Like It,” which toured in 2009, this summer the company will perform Shakespeare’s “Henry V.” Compared to the happy mess of “As You Like It,” “Henry V” is a more sober piece of theater. It falls into the category of the Shakespearean “history plays,” a title applied to the 11 pieces which depict the lives of English kings. However, do not be daunted, director Helen Machin-Smith says.
Fab Four fun hits Friday Harbor on Saturday, 8 p.m. when Abbey Road Live! returns to the San Juan Community Theatre. Not your typical Beatles look-a-like tribute band (these four lads don’t have mop-top haircuts or play Rickenbacker guitars), Abbey Road Live! is a show about bringing to life some of the more mature and complex Beatles materials in a raw and spirited fashion, while remaining true to the original recordings.
Splash of Summer Color Weekend is Saturday and Sunday. This “Something for everyone” weekend is a time to celebrate the fragrant harvest at the San Juan Island Lavender Festival and the fine art at the San Juan Island Summer Arts Fair.
