I must also add my name to the others who do not support Jeff Asher for San Juan County sheriff. I have been with the Sheriff’s Office for 34 years, and a sergeant for the past 20. First, I agree with the letters from Undersheriff Zerby and Sgt. Brennan. I know of no support for Asher from any of the officers within this department. That alone speak volumes about this election.
The Friday Harbor Animal Shelter’s sixth annual Wags to Riches is July 25 — Sunday — at the home of Bob and Lissa McDowell. Two local dog groups will headline the show: the Flying Dingo Agility team, and a group from Yankee Creek Farm. Attendees this year will see the return of Danny, the little guy with a mind of his own, who several years ago bolted from his team, ran into the crowd and stole the show.
Relay for Life San Juan County is July 24-25 — Saturday and Sunday — at the Friday Harbor High School track. Proceeds benefit the American Cancer Society, including programs that directly serve islanders.
Friday Harbor Airport’s Fly-In and Open House is July 24, beginning at 8 a.m. The event is part of the Friday Harbor Port District’s 60th anniversary. It’s also the airport’s 25th year under port ownership and management.
From the Chippendale dining table and chairs that starred in last winter’s play, “The Dining Room,” to jewelry, golf clubs, a leather bench/ottoman and more, the Community Arts Theatre Society’s (CATS) Attic Treasures is brimming with quality used items.
The scene opens on domestic normality. A wife fixes dinner, a husband chooses the wine. It is a normality, however, soon to be disrupted by events involving a certain boat sinking in the bay outside. Thus begins “The Connoisseurs,” Ed Strum’s comedy which opens Friday at San Juan Community Theatre. The performance of the play marks an important milestone for the theater. “The Connoisseurs” is the first locally written, full-length play to be staged in SJCT.
San Juan County Sheriff candidate Brad Fincher has two meet-and-greets scheduled. Fincher — www.fincher4sheriff.com — will meet islanders July 30, 4-7 p.m., in the OPAL Community Land Trust conference room, 286 Enchanted Forest Road, Eastsound; and Aug. 2, 5-7 p.m., in the San Juan Island Librry conference room in Friday Harbor. Light refreshments will be served.
The CAPR Executive Board strongly urges you to support Justice Richard Sanders. It is more important than ever that we elect judges who respect and apply the constitution as it was written and intended.
Join County Council members Richard Fralick, Orcas West, and Gene Knapp, Orcas East, for a Town Hall conversation at Fire Protection District No. 2, 45 Lavender Lane, Eastsound, on Aug. 4, 4-5:45 p.m.
Natural balance. The rabbits help sustain it here. They have their part to play and are here for a reason. Other forms of life thrive because of them. We all know this.
The extermination has already happened. A few hardy bunnies remain and NPS wants to shoot them because, just like life, rabbits refuse to go away.
I would like to ask that you join me in voting for the most qualified person running for San Juan County Council, Lopez/Shaw: Jerry Gonce. Prior to coming to Lopez, Jerry had basically been a city manager for most of his working life, and doing it very successfully. During these troubled times, we need someone like Jerry, who is a “hands-on, get things done” kind of person who will tackle the problems we face with non-partisanship and fiscal responsibility. As Jerry says, “WE CAN DO BETTER!”
I support Jeff Asher for San Juan County sheriff. He will do an excellent job; he has the skills and personality that a sheriff needs. I experienced these qualities in Jeff consistently during the 15 years I served on the San Juan County Dive Team under his leadership. He inspired me and the other team members to volunteer for this dangerous and uncomfortable work. I know that Jeff makes decisions that I can count on for my safety in the life-threatening situations the Dive Team encounters at each call out. He makes sure we have the training and support for the job we do.
