Why are we waiting for the federal government to solve our local ferry traffic problems? Can’t our fine state and local engineers design a simple lighting system to guide cars and walkers on and off our ferries?
We, the voters, will make up our own minds, thank you very much.
There is another way to look at this letter to the editor describing “no confidence” in Deputy Jeff Asher’s candidacy for sheriff in 2010. It is logical to deduce the following …
Mrs. Miller, I hope you give your island another chance, it deserves one. Everyone has an off day, but here we have fewer than most.
I have been to the Bahamas five times in my lifetime. The first in 1953 and the last about four years ago. In the course of these visits, I spent time in Nassau three times, the Jack Tar Hotel on Eleuthera twice, and Andros and three or four of the outer islands several times. In addition, I had friends who lived there. Based primarily on these visits, it is my opinion that one could hide in the Bahamas fairly easily and about as easily as the mainland USA. It would appear therefore, the task was no easier for the Bahamian police than the police here.
Please don’t let your summer go by without seeing Island Stage Left’s “Henry V.” I went last weekend only because I never miss a Stage Left production. I had never read nor seen nor had any special desire to see this particular play because I had assumed it would be some kind of historical exercise about events which would have little relevance in today’s world. Frankly, I assumed it would be kind of a yawner. I was wrong, wrong, wrong.
The County Fair is coming up fast and gardeners are probably planning their entries in the Flower and Fruit and Vegetable halls. We would like to remind entrants that the Horticultural entries have special green Exhibitor Tags which will be available at the public libraries. Each tag has two numbered parts which are separated after judging so our collator can fill in the details of the entry and awards on the white sheets everyone will provide.
I believe Ms. Fjellman, and indeed, virtually all of the other letter writers who felt the members of the Sheriff’s Office should have stayed silent, have missed the fairly obvious common thread in the deputies’ letters.
I have come to the difficult (and heart-wrenching) conclusion that the rabbits of South Beach have to go, for the betterment of the long-term health of the native ecosystem and its native inhabitants.
The San Juan County Fair is Aug. 18-21. The theme is “Locally Grown.” The fair features four days of competition, live entertainment (the headliners are bluegrass/Celtic rock group Clumsy Lovers), equestrian events, exhibits, rides and shows.
The Journal of the San Juan Islands announces its endorsement for sheriff in its Aug. 4 edition. “The Journal of the San Juan Islands did not make lightly its endorsement in the race for San Juan County sheriff,” the editorial states. “Five very fine candidates. We’ve studied each candidate’s background, experience and record. We’ve pored over each candidate’s issues and priorities. We’ve interviewed. We’ve covered the forums and studied the Q&As.”
Under Jeff Asher’s leadership, this dive team has gained a reputation as a competent and respected dive team among state and national rescue teams. Jeff has demonstrated to us the qualities and policies that he proposes to implement as sheriff, including careful personnel selection with an eye toward a commitment to excellence. He promotes skill development and retention as well as continued procedural review and assessment. Teamwork and personal accountability are hallmarks of Jeff’s leadership.
The San Juan County Sheriff’s Department, the San Juan Island Prevention Coalition and local pharmacies will accept expired and unused medications on the first Wednesday of every month, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., beginning Aug. 4. A sheriff’s deputy will be on site during those hours to collect the medication.
About 16 candidates for eight elected positions — including all five candidates for San Juan County sheriff — will attend the Salmon BBQ and Tea Party on July 31 — Saturday — 2-6 p.m., at the Big Red Barn, 1721 Cattle Point Road in Friday Harbor.
