Irene R. Meredith, of Friday Harbor, Wash., passed away on Friday, Sept. 3, 2010. She was 92 years old. Arrangements are pending with Moles Good Steward Funerals.

The San Juan Historical Museum hosts an “old island” historical home tour on Saturday, Sept. 25, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. This is a unique opportunity to tour four historically significant homes each with wonderful grounds. Each home is over 100 years old. The tour is self-guided and at your own pace.
In cooperation with the state Department of Natural Resources, the fire danger for San Juan County has officially been lowered from “Moderate” to “Low.” As warm weather wanes and with the recent light rainfall, many San Juan County residents are starting to think about autumn activities, like burning that pile of brush and tree limbs that they’ve collected all summer long. While the risk of a damaging forest fire is declining with the change in weather, there may still be a few warm and dry spells within the next several weeks.
National Park Superintendent Peter Dederich and County Councilwoman Lovel Pratt, San Juan South, will attend a neighborhood meeting Sept. 18, 2 p.m. in the Cape San Juan Firehall and Community Room. The meeting is being presented by the Cape San Juan and Cattle Point Estates neighborhood associations. The meeting will be about 90 minutes long.

San Juan Island Park and Recreation Commissioner Jim Ricks is resigning. Ricks, the county’s 911 coordinator and crew member on the sheriff’s boat Guardian, recently retired as a San Juan EMS paramedic. Ricks was appointed to the commission in May 2004 and elected to four-year terms in 2005 and 2009. He was commission chairman in 2005.
San Juan County will host a series of public meetings — Sept. 15, 22, 23 — on issues related to the update of the county’s Critical Areas Ordinance.
Rep. David Quall, the nine-term state representative who announced his retirement in February, has endorsed Kristine Lytton to succeed him in the House of Representatives. Lytton, Democrat, is president of the Anacortes School Board. She faces Republican Mike Newman, a Mount Vernon real estate agent, in the Nov. 2 election.
Those of us who wish to see the South Beach rabbits stay are not suggesting that “cute” rabbits are more valuable than any other species. We are simply opposed to eradicating a beloved, living, breathing island phenomenon.
The National Park Service will host a Star Party from 8:30-11 p.m. on Sept. 11 at the redoubt at American Camp. The Star Party is being held in celebration of dark night skies and the awe they inspire. A limited number of telescopes and binoculars will be provided. Visitors who own their own scopes are encouraged to bring them.
Last week, I vigorously and vociferously opposed the action of the County Council to charge $5 for “recycling only” trips to our transfer stations. I consider the council action to be totally inconsistent with everything we have heard from our citizens, a complete reversal of our county policy to encourage recycling, and, especially, will not address the serious revenue shortfall in our solid waste system.
