William James Wagner, of Friday Harbor, Wash., formerly of North Platte, Neb., died Aug. 12, 2010. Bill was born on Dec. 25, 1937, in Carroll, to William and Florence Wagner. He resided in Wayne during his childhood, graduated from Wayne High School in 1955 and attended Wayne State College.
Mark Miller was born Aug. 18, 1923 to Mark and Elizabeth Miller in Portland, Ore. He grew up in Medford. After a year of college at Oregon State University, he joined the Army Air Corps where he became a bombardier, flying B-17s out of England. He flew 25 missions as a member of the Eighth Air Force. When he returned in 1945, he continued his schooling, graduating from OSU in Engineering.
Clifford Elmer Rouleau, born May 21, 1928, died Sept. 6, 2010 in Harbor City, Calif. He was born in Friday Harbor, Wash., and spent his early years on San Juan and Orcas islands, also Maple Falls, Wash., and Mount Baker Highway.
Roy Berg, 85, long-time resident of Lopez Island, passed away Aug. 27, 2010 in Mukilteo, Wash.
He was laid to rest at a graveside service at Cypress Lawn Memorial Park in Everett, next to his second wife Bonnie Belle who died of cancer in 1964.
Tom Waits calls him a “great force of nature.” T. Bone Burnett says he’s “a master … a virtuoso.” And on Sept. 15 at 7:30 p.m., Friday Harbor gets the chance to experience that talent live when John Hammond makes his first appearance at San Juan Community Theatre.
San Juan Island is now host to the next generation of assistance animal. And she is only 24 inches high. You might not think a miniature horse would be a prime candidate for such service. However, local artist Jaime Ellsworth, an assistance-animal trainer, is one of few in the nation proving that supposition wrong.
The Wolverines varsity soccer team faced off on Saturday afternoon in a non-league game against Port Townsend. The Wolverines did not quite anticipate the aggression of their opponent but quickly reciprocated. The girls started off the first half playing mostly defense, with established players Maggie Andersen and Larissa Nash holding their flat four formation strong. A well-placed goal by the Port Townsend offense came at the end of the half in the 40th minute.
The San Juan Islands Agricultural Guild has received a $300,000 loan, which it says will enable it to proceed with purchasing 150 Nichols St. The loan was announced at a fundraiser Sept. 12 at San Juan Vineyards, at which an additional $36,000 was raised.
Photographs of a firefighter fighting a car fire without proper gear Aug. 10 led to the suspension of Friday Harbor Fire Chief Vern Long. But it wasn’t the first time firefighters fought a car fire without wearing their self-contained breathing apparatus, or SCBAs. A review of Journal photo files turned up previously unpublished photos of a car fire July 8, showing firefighters without SCBAs extinguishing Connie Auge’s smoldering 2003 VW Golf, parked in front of her hair salon.
