We likely all know by now that family farmers on our ferry-dependent islands provide us with “food security”. They produce meat, poultry, eggs and dairy, from well-fed healthy animals. They grow grains, fruits and vegetables using safe methods which also build our soils and make them more and more productive as the years go by. In addition, they provide jobs for local people, and they strengthen our economy.

I will be voting on Nov. 2 for Laura Jo Severson for County Council member, District 2, San Juan North. I urge other eligible voters to do the same. Incumbent Rich Peterson does not represent the progressive values of his district or county. Sixty percent of voters of District 2 who voted in the primary on Aug. 17 voted for Patty Murray. Mr. Peterson represents the vocal conservative minority in our community. His votes on the council reflect those interests.

The Board of Trustees of the San Juan Island Library has selected Marjorie Harrison of Scottsbluff, Neb., as the new library director. The hire was announced Wednesday. Harrison succeeds Laura Tretter, who resigned to move to the Bayfield Public Library near Durango, Colo.
