The Friday Harbor Wolverines girls soccer team will present a soccer camp for young players, Oct. 2 from 3-5 p.m. The camp follows the Wolverines’ home game against Meridian.
The Lynden Christian volleyball program has earned a reputation. And the Wolverines found out in a hurry just how powerful the perennially playoff-bound Lyncs can be. Friday Harbor (1-2) fell in three straight as an overpowering Lyncs squad cruised to victory Sept. 25 on their home court. Lynden Christian (3-1) wasted little time in sealing the match by tallying scores of 25-12, 28-8 and 25-6 en route to the win.
The Madrona Institute, a San Juan Island-based think tank on democracy and policy innovation, will host a free public symposium on the inner politics of the Gulf oil calamity, Thursday, Sept. 30, 7 p.m., in the Roche Harbor Pavilion. The symposium is titled “Holes in the World.”
A key deadline is approaching if you want to register to vote in the general election on Nov. 2. “There is too much at stake this year to not vote,” Secretary of State Sam Reed said in a press release. “But you can’t vote unless you’re registered. Do it before it’s too late.”
Randy and Melissa “Missy” Martin announce the birth of their son, Milo Riley Martin, born July 9, at Island Hospital in Anacortes. He weighed 9 pounds 3 ounces and was 22 1/4 inches long.
Vernadel Peterson has resigned as executive director of the San Juan Island Chamber of Commerce. She is moving back to Chehalis, where she will promote the Lifeline program at Providence Centralia Hospital. Her resignation is effective Oct. 31, but with vacation time her last day on the job will be Oct. 15.

Thanks for focusing on the sheriff’s contest in the manner The Journal did last night and for doing an all-around good job. First, the extension of time to respond to questions was certainly helpful. And the calm tone set by featuring just two candidates, the generous allotment of time for self-introductions, and length of the program which allowed an array of pertinent issues to be discussed left me feeling totally satisfied that I had attended such a quality meeting.

The state Department of Natural Resources will award grant dollars this fall to eligible fire districts and departments through the Wildland Fire Assistance Grant Program that is funded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Application deadline is Oct. 29.
The Disney Worldwide Conservation Fund has selected Kathleen Foley, director of education and outreach for the San Juan Preservation Trust, as one of six international 2010 Disney Conservation Heroes. Foley was chosen for her leadership of the Western Bluebird Reintroduction Project in the San Juan Islands, and is the only American to receive the award.
