They’re probably still dousing down the hot spots over at the San Juan Golf and Country Club.
Former Husky and NFL tight end Cam Cleeland and company set the course on fire for a sizzling first-place finish at the 22nd annual Wells Fargo San Juan Island Celebrity Golf Classic.
Cleeland, a familiar face at the annual charitable event, was teamed with local golfers Travis Mager, Kevin McCullough, Scott Williams and Jake Phillips in the event. They smoked the rest of the field by shooting a blistering 56 in 18 holes of golf.

San Juan ferry task force dissolved
    By Scott Rasmussen • May 29, 2008 5:15 pm

The best of intentions couldn’t spare a newly-created ferries task force from an untimely demise. Citing absence of a game plan, as well as its own lack of leadership and support, the San Juan County Council last week dissolved the task force which it intended to be its eyes and ears, and its advocate, in Olympia and at the headquarters of the state ferry system in Seattle, and beyond.

This female California sea lion has pursued boats and chased a family and their dog off Jackson's Beach
    Sea lion’s prognosis ‘not good’
    By Scott Rasmussen • May 29, 2008 1:59 pm

It’s hard to deny that the antics of a California sea lion that showed up recently on San Juan Island are, let’s say, amusing. In less than 24 hours, it gave chase to several boats — hoisting itself out of the water and onto the back of one boat — and then chased off a mother, son and family dog during the sea lion’s temporary takeover of Jackson’s Beach. But local biologists say there’s nothing funny about the affliction that the animal is probably suffering from. If they’re on target, its days could be numbered.

Getting a dozen islanders to agree on anything can prove next to impossible. Perhaps even more so if they’re all politicians. But that hasn’t stopped elected officials of San Juan County and the Town of Friday Harbor from joining forces and creating what could be a nearly united objection to the citizenship spot checks by the U.S. Border Patrol at the Anacortes ferry terminal.

Road fund may be tapped for stormwater loan
    By Scott Rasmussen • May 20, 2008 1:03 pm

Turns out the idea of using the Land Bank as leverage proved too hot to handle. So the San Juan County Council last week set its sights on the county’s multi-million-dollar road fund instead. Road revenue, the council agreed at its May 13 meeting, will provide a line of credit that hopefully will convince state officials of the county’s commitment to fulfill its obligation to manage stormwater runoff in the Eastsound Urban Growth Area.
