An open letter to the Friday Harbor Town Council:
I am writing to encourage your support of the Nichols Street farmers market proposal.
We are all well aware of the social, cultural and nutritional benefits of having a vibrant farmers market in our community. We must also be made aware of what a positive economic impact this has on the town.
By centering this enterprise in town we allow participation of the public on foot, for both visitors and residents alike. Were we to relegate the market to the fairgrounds, I’m afraid attendance would drop off steeply and few would be served efficiently.
While the town has invested heavily on adjacent property in creating the restroom facility, the subject property is in desperate need of a makeover. The proposed market facility would complete the visual as well as practical needs of the already charming “new” neighborhood created by the Popes and others who have taken civic pride to a new level.
This multi-use plan satisfies needs well beyond the farmers market and provides many new economic, social and cultural opportunities for our vibrant town.
I again urge you to support the Nichols Street Market Facility.
