The Economic Development Council of San Juan County, in partnership with the Washington State Department of Revenue, Economic Development Alliance of Skagit County and Island County Economic Development Council, will host a free online workshop to help business owners understand recent changes to Washington’s retail sales tax laws. The session, New Washington State Tax Codes, will take place on Monday, Dec. 8, from 9-10 a.m. via Zoom.
Beginning Oct. 1, 2025, certain business services, including advertising, IT and more, became subject to retail sales tax under ESSB 5814. Businesses that sell or purchase these services must now collect or pay sales tax accordingly. This one-hour session will explain: which business services are newly taxable, which services are exempt under the law and how to correctly collect, report and remit retail sales tax.
The workshop will be led by Lalo Mendoza, tax information specialist, and Darlene Warner, tax policy specialist, both with the Washington State Department of Revenue. Mendoza, a member of DOR’s Education and Outreach team, has spent five years helping taxpayers navigate Washington’s tax laws with clarity and confidence.
This workshop is free and requires pre-registration at https://sanjuansedc.org/bizlabs.
