Friday Harbor High School closed out its regular season with a district game against rival Coupeville High School.
“Our first matchup against Coupeville, Friday Harbor won 28–14. Losing to Coupeville would have resulted in a tiebreaker game to decide the league champion. Friday Harbor was up 7–6 at halftime. We came out slow in the third, digging ourselves into a 20–7 deficit,” said Head Coach Shawn Kleine, who added that the weather played a huge part for both teams with rainy and windy conditions.
With 4:36 left in the fourth quarter and trailing by 13, Cyrus Rollins powered into the end zone from 10 yards out. Jojo Holt converted the extra point to cut the deficit to six. Friday Harbor then recovered an onside kick and drove down to the 5-yard line. After using their final timeout with 15 seconds remaining, the Wolverines called two plays in case the first attempt failed. On the next snap, Jackson Feliz punched it in with 11 seconds left to tie the game at 20–20. Holt’s extra point was good, giving Friday Harbor a 21–20 lead.
The Wolverines recovered another onside kick — their third of the game — and took a knee to seal the comeback victory. Defense and special teams were key to the win, as Duncan Bogart and Parker Aylward each recorded an interception, and Friday Harbor went a perfect 3-for-3 on onside kick recoveries.
Boys Soccer
In their final two matches of the regular season, Friday Harbor closed out strong with back-to-back victories. On Oct. 22, the Wolverines went on the road to face Coupeville and came away with a convincing 5–1 win. They followed that up on Oct. 25 with a 6–0 home victory over Grace Academy, finishing their regular-season schedule on a high note.
Girls Soccer
In their final match of the regular season, the Friday Harbor girls soccer team went on the road to face La Conner on Oct. 23. The Wolverines battled hard in a close contest but ultimately fell just short, dropping a 4–3 decision to the Braves to wrap up regular-season play.
Boys Tennis
The Friday Harbor boys tennis team traveled to the Amy Yee Tennis Center on Oct. 22 for the district tournament. Senior Finn Graham, playing in the No. 1 singles position, capped off his season with an impressive fourth-place finish in a highly competitive field. Graham delivered his best tennis of the year, using a strong serve and sharp angles to keep opponents off balance throughout the tournament.
In doubles play, the No. 1 team of Brandon Prouty and Noah Hanson also earned a fourth-place finish. Prouty consistently found openings down the line and chased down deep shots, while Hanson capitalized on short balls with a mix of finesse and power.
At No. 2 singles, Crede Janson battled hard before bowing out in the first round, while the No. 2 doubles team of Elliott Roach and Gustav Johnson also put up a strong fight in their opening match. Alternates Andrew Rezabek and Roy Primus were on hand to support their teammates and stayed ready with their gear in case they were called into action.
“I’m proud of the effort the guys made on the court,” Coach Kyle Loring said. “We had a lot of fun, and all of them took home some lessons to build on.”
