New partnership expands library access for Friday Harbor High School students

Submitted by the San Juan Island Library and the San Juan Island School District.

The San Juan Island Library District and the San Juan Island School District have partnered to increase student access to public library resources. Starting with the 2025-2026 school year, all students enrolled at Friday Harbor High School will automatically receive a Student Access Account from the San Juan Island Library, linked to their existing student ID number.

This collaboration reflects the shared commitment of both districts to support education and equitable access to information. By using student ID numbers as library account credentials, students can more easily access library resources during the school day and at home. It also streamlines the use of library databases and digital tools in the classroom and for assignments. Access to these additional resources can enhance the learning experience of students and contribute to more successful academic outcomes.

Student Access Accounts provide access to:

Research, news and academic databases.

Thousands of eBooks and audiobooks via Libby and Hoopla.

Up to three physical checkouts of books, DVDs and other materials at a time.

This program represents the first phase of a long-term project aimed at extending public library access to every public school student on San Juan Island. It follows a growing trend across Washington state, where similar partnerships between public libraries and school districts are enhancing student learning.

Students are encouraged to visit the San Juan Island Library with a parent or guardian to sign up for a full-access library card, which includes additional borrowing privileges and access to more services.
