San Juan Islands PREPARE shakes things up with screening and discussion about the Cascadia Subduction Zone and earthquake faults in the San Juan Islands on Sept. 16 from 5:30-8 p.m. at the San Juan Island Grange, 152 Spring St.
The new nonprofit organization, San Juan Islands PREPARE, is introducing its 2025/2026 inaugural lecture series by unveiling the mysteries of the Cascadia Subduction Zone. The first event begins with a shake (or perhaps with a rumble). Nick Zentner’s infamous lecture from 2016, “Great Earthquakes in the Pacific Northwest,” will make you shake, laugh out loud and quake in your boots. Following the screening, local geologist Sarah Hanson will be on hand to present “Earthquake Faults in the San Juan Islands.”
“Great Earthquakes of the Pacific Northwest” was originally presented in 2016 by Zentner, geology professor at Central Washington University, and star of the Cascade PBS series, “Nick on the Rocks.” In this lecture, Zentner delves into scientific evidence surrounding the Cascadia Subduction Zone, providing attendees with a solid understanding of what this formidable hazard is capable of and why local preparedness groups are sprouting up along the Subduction Zone. Zentner also fact-checks the article that appeared in the New Yorker Magazine, “The Really Big One” by Kathryn Schultz. This pre-recorded lecture lasts an hour.
After intermission, Sarah Hanson, B.S. geology/geophysics and executive director of On Sacred Ground, will be on hand to discuss earthquake faults in the San Juan Islands, with an overview of how a megathrust from the Cascadia Subduction Zone might impact our critical infrastructure. Hanson will also discuss other faults in the San Juan Islands.
To help you recover from the shockwaves of this presentation, we will be serving refreshments during intermission, including Rocky Road ice cream and samples of freeze-dried emergency fruits.
The following lecture in this series will be held on Sept. 30, featuring the topic of tsunamis. More information about this presentation will soon be available.
