Local artists Jaime Ellsworth and Jan Murphy are longtime proponents of animal welfare. In fact, the two met while serving on the board of directors for the Animal Protection Society of Friday Harbor over 15 years ago.
Since their days at APS-FH, both have steered their compassion for animals into separate international organizations, working to protect and save animals. Ellsworth has focused her attention on the organization NOWZAD, working since 2006 to rescue animals affected by war in Afghanistan and Ukraine. Murphy has worked with the organization Animals Asia for over 25 years, helping to end the cruel practice of bear bile farming in China and Vietnam.
The two will feature their artworks at an exhibition during September in the lobby of the San Juan Community Theatre, hosting an artist’s reception on Sept. 2, from 4-6 p.m. at the theater. Both artists will donate 50% of the sales of their artwork to their respective organizations. The exhibit will be available for viewing and purchasing artwork throughout the month.
