San Juan County DEM update on tsunami impacts from the recent earthquake in Kamchatka:

Submitted by the San Juan County Department of Emergency Management

Editors note: This udpate was made shortly after DEM’s second update on the evening of July 29

This will be the final update on this event, unless there is a dramatic change in the impact forecast.

Forecast remains that there will be little or no impacts to the San Juan Islands, but we would ask anyone on or in the water from Tuesday night until later Wednesday be on the lookout for strong or unusual currents and tidal conditions. Current impacts are unlikely, but not out of the question.

If anyone encounters anything unusual or witnesses impacts of any kind, please email brendanc@sanjuancountywa.gov or post them to this post on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/sanjuandem/.

REMINDER: current best available science tells us that we will always feel the earthquake if there will be major tsunami impacts in the islands. That science continues to evolve, but that is our current understanding.

Thanks everyone for your patience as the data around this event came into focus.
