Michael McRoberts of Friday Harbor retired from the U.S. Navy Oct. 14, following 20 years of military service.

McRoberts, Friday Harbor High School Class of ’81, was senior chief petty officer with the Submarine Service detachment in Mystic, Conn, at the time of his retirement.

McRoberts completed various assignments both abroad and in the U.S. during two decades with the Navy. He served onboard the USS Michigan, a guided-missile submarine, the USS Columbia and USS Philadelphia, attack submarines, and the USS Emory S. Land, lead submarine tender, while statioined in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, Bangor, Wash., New London, Conn., and Sardina, Italy.

McRoberts and wife, Lisa, are parents of two adult daughters, Kelsey and Shelby, and a new grandson, Gavyn. He is the son of Joyce McRoberts Graham and Gary McRoberts, formerly of Friday Harbor. Lisa McRoberts is the daughter of Dr. George Fraley and wife, Judy, of Friday Harbor. They reside in Canterbury, Conn.

McRoberts retirement ceremony took place in mid-October, onboard the 81-foot schooner Argia, stationed at Mystic, Conn. It was, “a very moving and impressive ceremony to end a wonderful adventure and career”, according to McRoberts’ relatives.
