TEDxSanJuanIsland streams TED talks from Vancouver

Presentations by world-class speakers, scientists and industry professionals are coming to the San Juan Island big screen.

“This live stream is an opportunity for people to see some of these amazing presentations and performances put on by the people at TED,” Gary Franklin, TEDxSanJuanIsland organizer said. “This is kind of a sneak peek to what TED is presenting to the world and is super relevant to what is happening in the world today.”

From 9 a.m.–1 p.m. on Saturday, April 27, at the Palace Theatre, TEDxSanJuanIsland presents four hours of thought-provoking lectures sponsored by the Town of Friday Harbor and Windermere Real Estate. • First Aid Kit – With their otherworldly harmonies and timeless songwriting, Swedish duo First Aid Kit deliver tough new songs on their 2018 album Ruins.

• Hamdi Ulukaya is a pioneer of the natural food movement and the founder of Chobani, one of the fastest-growing food companies of the last decade.

• Andrew Marantz writes narrative journalism about politics, the internet and the way we understand our world.

• As director of the Center for Health and the Global Environment, Kristie Ebi studies and develops interventions to help at-risk populations deal with climate change.

• Asmeret Asefaw Berhe is a global-change scientist passionate about all things related to the science and beauty of soils.

• Edward Tenner is an independent writer, speaker and editor analyzing the cultural aspects of technological change.

• Matt Walker is a brain scientist trying to understand why we sleep. His research examines the impact of sleep on human health and disease.

• Karen Lloyd studies novel groups of microbes in Earth’s deep surface biosphere, collecting them from disparate remote places such as Arctic fjords, volcanoes in Costa Rica, even deep in mud in the Marianas Trench.
