A 19-year-old woman was flown off-island for treatment of unknown injuries late Monday after she reportedly stepped from a moving vehicle on Cattle Point Road near Mill Street.
Sheriff Bill Cumming identified the woman as Paige Clem, of Friday Harbor. Cumming said Clem and her father, Terry Clem, who was driving the Dodge 4×4, “may have been in a heated discussion” and she wanted to get out of the vehicle.
“She didn’t know the vehicle was going as fast as it was,” Cumming said.
The vehicle was headed away from town on Cattle Point Road, at about 35-40 mph, the sheriff said.
Clem was airlifted from Friday Harbor Airport to St. Joseph’s Hospital in Bellingham. San Juan EMS Chief Jim Cole said she was in stable condition and talking to medical personnel.
The incident occurred about 5:30 p.m. Firefighters closed Cattle Point Road from Mill Street to Golf Course Road for about 30 minutes until Clem was removed from the scene by ambulance.
