“Chicago” auditions Jan. 29 at San Juan theater

Adults and teens, 15 years and older, are invited to audition for San Juan Community Theatre’s jazzy spring musical: “Chicago.”

Director Margaret Hall will hold auditions at the PARC Building (70 Saltspring Dr.) at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 29 and 6:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 30.

“Chicago” is a musical vaudeville, set in 1927 Chicago — think prohibition, speakeasies, bootleggers, lawlessness, gangsters, flappers, jazz! The musical is based on a non-musical play written by reporter Maurine Dallas Watkins in 1926 about actual criminals and crimes she reported on. The original Broadway production opened in 1975. The 2002 film version of the musical won the Academy Award for Best Picture. Performances of “Chicago” will be presented in the Whittier Theatre from May 5 through 20. Audition info and scripts are at the SJCT Box Office with a $10 deposit. More info is at sjctheatre.org.
