Holiday Gala Event Dec. 5

Holiday Gala Event Dec. 5

San Juan Community Theatre’s annual Holiday Festival on Saturday, Dec. 5 brings island and theater friends together to embrace the joy of the holidays and help keep the theatre thriving at the same time.

The nonprofit theatre’s biggest fundraiser of the year, the festival features gourmet food, silent and live auctions and island entertainment. The evening décor will bring glimmers of a modern return to the stylish 1940s as guests enjoy: the return of popular auctioneer Jay Fiske, who’s humor and genuine personality wowed last year’s audience; hundreds of silent and live auction items to bid on, including many travel opportunities such as a “Kentucky Bourbon Trail and Churchill Downs VIP Experience” or the “Ultimate Pro Sports Fan Getaway” (a live auction catalogue is available at www.sjctheatre.org).

New twists to both the gourmet food – Coho Restaurant is catering the event for the first time – and musical entertainment

Tickets ($100 per person) are online or call 378-3211.

20th Century Opera in HD

The next screening of The Met: Live in HD at San Juan Community Theatre on Sunday, Dec. 6 at 2 p.m. features one of the most important – not to mention notorious – stage works of the 20th century.

Alban Berg’s Lulu, shown left, is the drama of a young woman who sexually and emotionally dominates a wide range of willing victims, both male and female.

Acclaimed artist and director William Kentridge (The Nose) applies his unique theatrical vision to the notorious femme fatale who shatters lives, including her own.

Berg’s score employs the twelve-tone technique pioneered by his teacher Arnold Schoenberg but in a keenly dramatic way that makes it accessible to all kinds of audiences; the masterful score is in the sure hands of Met Music Director James Levine.

Soprano Marlis Petersen has excited audiences around the world with her portrayal of the tour-de-force title role, a wild journey of love, obsession, and death. Susan Graham joins a winning cast, including Daniel Brenna and Johan Reuter.

Tickets for Lulu are $20 for adults, $18 for SJCT members and $10 for student reserved.

Due to a financial agreement with the Met, no SJCT coupons are accepted for these productions. Tickets are available on-line at www.sjctheatre.org or at the SJCT Box Office: 378-3210.
