With themes like “Trousers of Terror,” “PowerPants!” and “Cirque du Slaque,” Captain Smartypants brings cerebral humor and talented voices to the San Juan Community Theatre on Saturday, 7:30 p.m.

The nine-man ensemble brings the “best of the best” to the Whittier stage as they celebrate a decade of their zany, yet thought-provoking live stage shows.

Directed by Eric Lane Barnes, the group is an off-shoot of the internationally-renowned Seattle Men’s Chorus, the largest community chorus in America and the largest gay chorus in the world (along with the Seattle Women’s Chorus).

This is the ensemble’s first visit to Friday Harbor. San Juan Island’s David Bentley, who has performed in several choruses (including San Juan Singers) and sings in the choir at St. David’s Episcopal Church, said he’s seen Captain Smartypants many times around the Northwest and that Friday Harbor is “really lucky” to finally have them perform here.

“Sometimes campy and silly, sometimes melancholy and serious, these guys never fail to knock my socks off with their creativity and talent,” Bentley said.

Island harpist and composer Mary WillAllen worked with Barnes when he was a choreographer and she was director of the Sacramento Women’s Chorus in the early 1990s. “I like how they can take almost any song and mess with it in a surprising way,” WillAllen said.

Captain Smartypants’ Friday Harbor appearance is underwritten by Friday Harbor’s PFLAG chapter. Tickets are $16 for adults, $8 for student reserved, with $5 student RUSH one hour before the show, if there are still seats available.
