Continuing the long-standing tradition of cleaning up the island’s beaches and roadways for Earth Day, locals collected approximately 1.3 tons of garbage April 22.

Coffee and goodies were provided by Lautenbach Recycling to provide fuel for the volunteer’s efforts.

An after-party was held at the San Juan Brewing Company, where despite threats of rain, people gathered to listen to T-FLo

and watch as the Finny Awards were handed out.

This year there were two-lifetime achievement awards, Ken Balcomb for his work with the Southern Resident Orcas which was accepted by his son, Kelley Balcomb-Bartok; and Nick Teague who worked tirelessly on the San Juan National Monument.

Jenny DeGroot received the Individual Award for her environmental work, and Ashley Hamlin received the Youth Award.
