(Editor’s note: The following poem was written during the March 14 school walkout by bystander David Mark Jenkins. Read more about the walkout in “Friday Harbor students honor Parkland shooting victims.”)
In honor of all the students across America:
The Protest
Students
in a school yard,
kneeling.
Parents and Grandparents
against the fence, cheering, then silent,
in protest,
in this small place, on this small island –
part of the main, part of the Nation,
grieving, and marching,
and kneeling,
in Hope.
For they are the Future,
our Future,
we, against the fence.
