On Tuesday afternoon, March 22, the Friday Harbor golf squad beat Orcas at the San Juan Golf Club, 192-210.
For the second time in a row, Friday Harbor junior, and star Dylan Posenjak was the medalist for the home team. Dylan swung the clubs for a score of 43, after nine holes. The second and third lowest scores went to Dylan’s teammates Joe Stewart with 45, and Tanner Wilson with 49. The fourth best score of all players was put up by Maia Lewis-Shunk of Orcas, followed by her twin sister Zoe who shot a 53.
The top four scores from each team are added, to give the final score.
This week Dylan put his “first-hole jitters” behind him and shot the first hole one under par. He narrowly edged out teammate Joe Stewart by just two shots for the day. Joe and Dylan were matched up with the top players from Orcas, Maia and Zoe Lewis-Shunk, who are twins and playing in just their second year for Orcas. They both had outstanding seasons as eighth graders last year with Maia going all the way to the Woman’s State Tournament at the end of the year.
The Wolverines also had help from Tanner Wilson of the Spring Street International School, who is allowed to play for Friday Harbor. Tanner shot a 49, breaking a 50 over nine holes for the first time in competition. Freshmen Levi Doenges shot a 55, and Weston Swartz shot a 57 to round out the top five scores of the match.
“I’m excited to see all these first-year players shooting in the low 60s and high 50s. The golf program at Friday Harbor High School looks pretty solid for the next few years!” Coach Jack Rice said.
The Wolverine golfers next match is at Lopez on Tuesday, April 4, and their next home match is Tuesday, April 18 against Grace Academy.
