The Wolverines hadn’t scored 50 points or more in a single game since mid-December.

So much for that.

Seniors Liz Taylor and Mandy Turnbull combined for 24 points and Larissa Nash tossed in nine, as Friday Harbor (9-2 league) claimed a pivotal 51-42 victory at home Monday over Darrington. Sophomore Tabatha Keane added 10.

“You have ups and downs in any season,” Coach Eric Jangard said. “We had to work through a rough spot but we’ve been playing pretty good basketball in the last week or so.”

The Wolverines couldn’t have picked a better time to reignite the offense. Trailing by two points at the half, they erased the deficit and outscored the Loggers (8-3 league, 12-4 overall) 16-11 in the third period to grab a lead going into the final period of play. They put up 15 points fourth-quarter points and held Darrington to just nine to seal the win.

Darrington’s Amanda Gentry dropped in 16 points to lead all scorers and Jessica Brooks had 11. But the Loggers managed only 20 points after break, two less than in the first half of play.

“The second half was definitely ours,” Jangard said.

And so is their shot at the league title. Until Monday, Friday Harbor, Darrington and La Conner (9-2 league) had been locked in a three-way tie at the top of the Northwest 1A/2B League standings.

If the Wolverines prevail today over winless Cedar Park Christian, they will square off against the Braves, Friday, at La Conner, with the league title on the line.

The Wolverines wrap up league play and close out their 20-game regular season schedule at home, Saturday, against Orcas; tip off is 12:30 p.m.
