Small earthquakes hit near the San Juan Islands

At least 100 felt the quake in Friday Harbor — did you?

Eight small earthquakes struck off the coast of San Juan Islands on Sunday, Jan. 29 and Monday, Jan. 30.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, 21 Friday Harbor residents reported the 2.8 magnitude earthquake at 6:27 p.m., Sunday and 79 reported the 3.1 magnitude earthquake at 3:03 a.m., Monday.

A San Juan County Department of Emergency Management notification said the earthquakes occurred in San Juan Channel, between Jones Island and San Juan Island’s Mineral Point.

If an earthquake occurs, the DEM website suggests to “drop to the floor, take cover under a sturdy table, desk or chair and hold in place until the shaking stops.” For more information on earthquakes and how to prepare for disasters, contact www.sanjuandem.net or 370-7612.
