Submitted by San Juan Island Fire & Rescue.
There is a critical need for outer island fire volunteers. Since 1958, San Juan Island Fire & Rescue has relied on volunteers as the backbone of local fire protection. Many of our stations were built by neighbors and remain staffed by residents committed to community safety and affordable insurance.
Right now, several outer stations face a drastic shortage of volunteers. This means local response in those areas could be delayed or ineffective during emergencies. Without volunteers, we cannot meet state standards that protect lives and property — and insurance ratings for the entire island could suffer.
Why volunteer?
• Professional training in firefighting, rescue, hazardous materials and first aid.
• Modern gear and equipment.
• Expense stipend and pension enrollment.
• Membership in the Fire Fighters Association.
• Additional training scholarships and support.
Emergency response is a shared responsibility. When the alarm sounds, volunteers make a difference for families, friends and visitors — especially during major incidents that require many hands.
If you live near an outer station, your help is urgently needed. Step up now — your island depends on you.
Recruitment starts Jan. 3. Learn more or sign up at sjifire.org under the Join Us tab, or visit our office during business hours.
