Libertarian Brian Luke filed to get on the ballot last week for Washington State’s 2nd Congressional District, which includes all or parts of Snohomish, Whatcom, Skagit, San Juan and Island counties.

Just to avoid confusion, Brian’s brother Mike Luke is running for the U.S. Senate in Washington State as a Libertarian.

Brian Luke is part of over 30 Libertarians in Washington State running in federal, congressional, state executive, state legislative or county commissioner offices. Luke is endorsed by the Libertarian Party of Washington.

Luke is 43, lives in Lynnwood, and has worked in the grocery business for 20 years. He has an Masters of Art. in international studies (Middle East focus) from the University of Washington and a paralegal certificate from Edmonds Community College.

Luke joined the Libertarian Party of Washington in March of this year. Previously, he was involved in the GOP for more than eight years, even serving a term as Vice-Chair of the Snohomish County Republican Party.

As far as why Luke left the GOP, he states that, “I realized that there was little room for libertarian ideas in the Republican Party. But I felt that the GOP was fiscally irresponsible at the national level, embraced an expensive and dangerous foreign policy, and had very little youth appeal for a number of reasons.”

Luke states that his campaign “is partly a revolt against the national GOP fiscal and foreign policy. Sometimes Republicans blame everything on the Democrats for the mounting national debt and foreign policy woes, but far too often refuse to look at their own party.”

Luke is focusing on several issues, including trade, fiscal and foreign policy.

As far as his candidacy goes, Luke states that, “people are fed up with the two-party system and are far more open to other candidates. The Libertarian Party is not Right or Left but take elements of each and that could be appealing.” As far as challenging current Democrat incumbent Rick Larsen, he states that, “I would be the best candidate in the general election because I’m the only challenger that can get votes from the Right and the Left.”
