About Us

SanJuanJournal.com was founded on Oct. 2, 1998 as an online news and information source about San Juan Island and the area. It is updated daily. SanJuanJournal.com functions as a different entity than The Journal. There are stories and features included in The Journal and its magazines that are not included on SanJuanJournal.com. Likewise, there are stories and features on SanJuanJournal.com that are not included in The Journal and its magazines. The Journal of the San Juan Islands was founded on Sept. 13, 1906 as the Friday Harbor Journal. The Journal is published Wednesdays and has more readers than any other information source on San Juan Island. Besides producing award-winning news, sports and features coverage, the Journal staff also produces The Book of the San Juan Islands, an almanac and relocation guide; and Springtide, a visitors' guide. The newspaper also produces special sections related to business, education, sports and the San Juan County Fair. The Journal's home base, San Juan Island, is 55.3 square miles and has a population of 6,500 people.

Cali Bagby originally came to the islands in 2011 as a reporter at the Journal and the editor of the Weekly. She then moved on to become the assistant editor of the Sounder on Orcas in 2012. Prior to coming to the islands, Bagby worked for nearly two years as an embedded journalist with a Medevac unit in Iraq and a Marine unit in Afghanistan.

Heather Spaulding was born in Bellingham, but she became an island girl when she moved to Friday Harbor with her family, at the age of six. She attended Evergreen State University in Olympia, Wash., with most of her credits being in history and literature. To her surprise, by the time she received her bachelor of arts, she found she missed her home, island life, and found herself moving back in 1994. Spaulding has worked with Friends of the San Juans, and volunteered with Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault services and Soroptimist International of Friday Harbor.

Wright first moved to Orcas Island in 1991 and became part of the team in August 2015, where she manages circulation for the Island's Weekly, Island's Sounder and the Journal of the San Juan Islands. A native Oregonian, Anna V. Smith has spent most of her life in the Pacific Northwest. Smith worked at the Eugene Weekly and lived in Seattle briefly before moving to the San Juan Islands to cover news, sports, crime and local life on the islands.
