As the spring sports season winds down, Friday Harbor High School’s baseball and softball teams are hitting their stride at just the right time. Both squads wrapped up their regular seasons with impressive winning streaks and strong performances against league rival La Conner, building momentum heading into postseason play.
Baseball
Friday Harbor High School ended its regular season on a hot streak, winning five straight games, capped off by a home-and-home sweep of La Conner. The Wolverines defeated the Braves 10-2 on Tuesday.
“Tuesday was Senior Night, and our three seniors pitched for us,” said head coach Jon Smith. “Triston Bremer started and threw four innings, striking out 11. Marcos Soto pitched one inning, striking out one, and Mason Smith threw the last two innings, striking out three. Final score: 10-3 for the win.”
Smith added, “Boaz Moses rocked a triple down the right field line, driving in one run and scoring once himself. Joe Holt and Floyd Holman each had two hits and one RBI. Mason Smith hit a double and drove in two runs, and Henry Pope also hit a double.”
On Thursday, the Wolverines secured another victory over La Conner, winning 18-9. Jackson Feliz pitched the first three innings, striking out eight batters, and also contributed at the plate with a single, a double, and three RBIs. Harrison Edge had a standout game with three hits, a walk, six RBIs, two stolen bases, and two runs scored. Marcos Soto added a triple and scored once. Parker Aylward and Joe Holt each recorded two hits. Floyd Holman chipped in with a single, a double, and three RBIs. Triston Bremer had one hit, three stolen bases, and scored four runs. Mason Smith contributed a hit, one RBI, and scored three times, while Henry Pope hit a double and scored once.
With those two wins, the Wolverines finished the regular season with a 13-6 overall record and a 10-2 mark in league play. They now look ahead to the district tournament at Skagit Valley College.
Softball
The FHHS softball team also closed the regular season on a high note with back-to-back wins over La Conner, defeating the Braves 16-6 at home on Tuesday and 14-2 on the road Thursday.
Tuesday was Senior Night for softball as well. After the game, senior players Luca Pignatiello, Mia Germain, Sarah Cruz and Paige Carlton took one last run around the bases as their family and teammates cheered them on.
The team finished the season with an 8-11 overall record and a 5-5 mark in conference play.
