Wrestling

The Wolverine wrestling team is sending three wrestlers and an alternate to the state competition this Friday at the Tacoma Dome. Juniors James Guard, Jesse Payne and Hunter Rustad will all wrestle for a state title in their weight classes. The regional championship was held Friday, Feb. 12 at Adna high school in Chehalis.

“The other wrestlers … seriously misjudged our strength,” said coach Taine Pyle. “Our kids did amazing work.”

Both Payne, in the 120-weight class, and Rustad at 170, placed fourth. Guard, who also made it to the state competition last year, placed third in the 113-pound division. Senior Thomas Synoground placed fifth in the 145-pound class and will attend the state tournament as an alternate. Sophomore Wade Swirtz placed sixth at the regional tournament.

Boys Basketball

The Wolverine boys basketball team beat La Conner 71-52 on Saturday, Feb. 13 getting themselves one step closer to the Class 2B State Tournament. They will meet LaConner again at 6:15 on Thursday, Feb. 18 at Sedro-Woolley High School. If they win they will secure District 1’s only spot in the state play-offs.

Girls Basketball

The Lady Wolverines lost their first round in a close game against La Conner on Feb. 12 but came back to bounce the Orcas Vikings from the district tournament with a 54-31 win on Tuesday, Feb. 16. The girls’ team plays La Conner again at 4:45 on Thursday, Feb. 18 at Sedro-Woolley High School. If they win they’ll go on to face La Conner once more in a loser-out, winner-to-state game on Saturday Feb. 20.
