San Juan Islanders have a unique opportunity to visit a historic sailing vessel in the Port of Friday Harbor on Wednesday, Aug. 31.

The ketch Golden Rule will be open for free tours, and the crew will be standing by to tell you about her Quaker beginnings and the 1958 attempt to sail into the nuclear testing area in the Marshall Islands. There is also an excellent line-up of music at Fairweather Park in the afternoon, and an early evening lasagna dinner and presentation at the San Juan Island Yacht Club

Golden Rule will be in Friday Harbor as part of a tour throughout the Puget Sound and Salish Sea. She will be stopping in Friday Harbor on the way between participating in the Vancouver Wooden Boat Show and the Victoria Classic Boat Festival. Her mission as she travels to various ports is to raise awareness of environmental and nuclear issues. Speakers at the dinner will include the national vice president of Veterans for Peace, who now owns the vessel, and a short presentation by the local San Juan Island Quakers.
