In conjunction with the annual Friends of the Library Book Sale on July 30 and 31 — Friday and Saturday — the library will offer works from its permanent art collection for sale by sealed bid.

The sale will be held at Friday Harbor Elementary School on Grover Street. The sale starts on Friday with a special opening for members of the Friends only, from 6-8 p.m.

Saturday, the sale starts at 10 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m.

The bids will be sealed and collected the afternoon on Saturday. The winners will be notified by phone and e-mail. The listed works are currently on display, primarily in the conference room area, for admirers to view prior to the auction. The public is invited to enjoy the exhibit and consider purchasing a work or two by San Juan Island area artists to add to their established or beginning art collection.

The art committee and library are selling some of the collection because the library has exhausted its storage space for art. The pieces to be auctioned have been enjoyed by the public for more than six years, some for many years, and were donated either by the artist or by a collector.

The money raised from the sale will directly benefit the library. Even though the library owns the art and has the authority to sell it, the art committee made every reasonable effort to contact the art donors or their families and estates regarding this sale.

On Sept. 11, the current art exhibit, “Artist’s Choice,” will end and a showing of a portion of the library’s permanent collection will be on display for public enjoyment.
