Summer programs return to San Juan Community Theatre

San Juan Community Theatre is pleased to announce our Summer 2021 camps to be held outdoors at San Juan County Fairgrounds! Camp registration for Could You Hug a Cactus and The Seussification of Romeo and Juliet open April 5, online, at sjctheatre.org. See audition info below for 101 Dalmatians Kids.

‘Could You Hug a Cactus?’

Directed by Penelope Haskew and Chiara Power; $160; Monday-Friday, June 28-July 9; Cast A grades K-2, 10 a.m.-noon (eight kids minimum); Cast B grades 3-5, 1 p.m.-3 p.m. (eight kids minimum).

Students will learn the basic principles of acting and developing a character as they rehearse and perform Could You Hug a Cactus? A new musical based on the poems of Phillip Van Wagoner with Book by Jessica Penzias, Music & Lyrics by Denver Casado. Every student will have a solo singing or speaking part assigned on the first day of camp. Public performances at 11:15 a.m. and 2:15 p.m. on July 9.

‘Seussification of Romeo & Juliet’

Directed by Penelope Haskew, Jenni Merritt and Chiara Power; $360; 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Monday-Friday, July 12-24, beach day July 16, shows July 24; grades 6-9 (12 kids minimum).

Students will have a blast learning about theatre, Shakespeare and Dr. Seuss’s special rhythm as they rehearse and perform The Seussification of “Romeo & Juliet” by Peter Bloedel, no kissing required! Every student receives a speaking part on the first day of camp and public performances are 2 p.m. on Friday, July 23, and noon and 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 24.

“Disney’s 101 Dalmatians Kids”

Directed by Penelope Haskew, Jenni Merritt and Chiara Power; Musical Direction by Jamie Mountford; $440; 10 a.m.-3 p.m., July 26-Aug. 7; performances at 2 p.m. Aug. 6 and 2 p.m. and noon Aug. 7; Ages 7-18 (15 kids minimum). Pre-registration Auditions required.

In our most advanced camp, students will create canine magic as they put their skills to work on Disney’s 101 Dalmatians Kids. These performers will have a great time and introduce young audiences to the thrills of live theatre in the process! Students are required to audition in advance of registering for the camp.
