People’s Choice Award Winners Announced at SJIMA

Submitted by San Juan Islands Museum of Art

“What fun — to study each piece of art, then circle around and pick the ones I like best,” was a common refrain in the galleries during recent visits to San Juan Islands Museum of Art.

View the art that the community voted as their favorites before the Artists’ Registry Show closes on Feb. 21. The public was invited to mark their ballots in December 2019 and early January, and the votes were tallied in time for all to see them on display.

The annual countywide exhibition of Artists’ Registry participants is at the SJIMA. Cash prizes and ribbons were awarded courtesy of the sponsorship of Suzy Wakefield. The art media of choice range from acrylic painting to encaustic and from bronze to mixed media.

Winners for two-dimensional art

• First place, $300 to Debbie Daniels for “Fluid Motion.”

• Second place, $150 to Kim Bruder for “Gratitude.”

• Third place, $50 to Laura Bauer for her untitled piece.

Three-dimensional winners

• First place, $300 to Susan Williams for “Orpheus.”

• Second place, $150 to Eben Shay for “Supernova.”

• Third place, $50 to Lloyd Thompson for “Demon on the Dance-floor, In Memorium.”

The art is part of a 70 plus-piece art show featuring the best of each artist’s work for the community to enjoy. The show was sponsored by Malinda Dreyer; Town of Friday Harbor; Printonyx; Harbor Rental; and Browne’s Home Center.

Showing in the atrium gallery is Cathryn Mallory’s “Tide of Transition,” a vision of under the Salish Sea. The Artists’ Registry Show is open from 11 a.m-5 p.m., Friday-Monday, until Feb. 21. Admission is $10 for adults; SJIMA members and those 18 and under admitted free of charge. Mondays are “Pay As You Can Days.”
