Mortgage Master Service Corporation in Friday Harbor has moved to 260 Spring St. Suite 5 in Sundries Court Mall. Staff are kicking off their grand opening events with a homebuyers class from 5:30-7:30 p.m., Thursday, May 31. Snacks will be provided.
Hosted by the branch manager and local Friday Harbor resident, Lauren Sands, the class will familiarize students with peculiarities of buying in the San Juan Islands; what to expect during the mortgage process; how to understand rate quotes and closing costs; loan programs available; and basic underwriting guidelines. Knowledge is empowering, making for a smooth ride from accepted offer to close.
Sands became a licensed loan officer in 2013 after watching the impact of the Great Recession. Subprime loans were falsely rated as AAA+ securities and packaged into collateralized debt obligations, triggering one of the worst foreclosure crises and economic recessions in America’s history.
Sands has been in the mortgage industry for over half a decade and serving the Friday Harbor community for three years. Mortgage Master Service Corporation is a local family-owned company out of Kent, Washington, with values that closely aligned with hers.
Marilyn Porter, president of Mortgage Master Service Corporation since their founding in 1984, wouldn’t allow loan officers to offer high-rate, high-commission products that would eventually be known as predatory. When this happened, some loan officers retaliated by leaving the company.
In Washington state, loan officers are classified as fiduciaries, which means the law requires them to do what’s in the client’s best interest. This isn’t the case in many other states.
