Submitted by the San Juan Islands Museum of Art.

Join the Archipelago Collective’s 2022 Chamber Festival on Sept. 10 at 2 p.m. for a celebration of new music. This concert is presented in collaboration with the San Juan Islands Museum of Art and features a world premiere by composer Ha-Yang Kim. Her piece takes inspiration from the environs of the San Juans and is structured around the WSDOT ferry schedules.

The Archipelago Collective and SJIMA are pleased to present three works by living female composers, including local resident Alex Shapiro. The works include a world premiere for Ha Yang Kim; Blu-Tack by Frey Whaley-Cohen; and Intermezzo for Bassoon and Harp by islander Alex Shapiro.

The concert, NEW WAVES, highlights the wonderful diversity of contemporary classical music. This event is part of the Summer Festival 2022 series in Friday Harbor from September 9-11. The complete schedule and the exclusive purchasing of tickets can be viewed at https://www.archipelagocollective.org/festival. For this concert, the admission is $25.

Ha-Yang Kim is a multifaceted cellist and composer who creates her own music based on a unique musical language of extended string techniques. Her musical influences draw from a range of rock, jazz, and improvised Western classical music as well as from non-western musical sources.

Freya Waley-Cohen is a British-American composer whose fluid music is full of shifting kaleidoscopic colors and patterns anchored around melodic lines. that twist and wind. It is characterized by contrasts between earthy rhythmic play, fragility, luminous spaces, and a sense of the otherworldly.

Alex Shapiro is noted for “her seamless melding of live and recorded sounds, and for her innovative uses of multimedia in performance and music education.”

All three composers have extraordinary bodies of work and have had their works presented at prestigious concert halls around the world.
