To what end? | Letter

I am disheartened by your publication last week of the letter entitled “Misuse of Power,” regarding an interaction witnessed between a county employee and a retail employee. Sadly in this era of Facebook, other Web-based public forum sites and this publication, people have the ability to publically criticize and shame others. To what end? How does writing a letter to the Journal solve the problem? How does it take steps towards a solution? To me, an appropriate action to affect change (if the person was “on duty’” at the time) would be for the individual witnessing the events to address her concerns directly to the employee’s supervisor not the readers of the Journal. I also fail to see why the Journal chose to publish this letter. How does it inform or benefit the community? In our very divided nation, a modicum of civility begins at home.
