For the past eight years, I’ve proudly served as a Commissioner for the Port of Friday Harbor and am committed to continuing this service by seeking reelection. My tenure has been marked by significant achievements directly benefiting our community. We successfully acquired and preserved Jensen’s Boatyard and Ship Yard Cove Marina, ensuring these vital maritime assets remain accessible. As a local landowner, the Port champions the growth of our small businesses, partnering with tenants to support their crucial role in our island’s economy. We’ve also expanded public access to Jacksons Beach, enhancing recreational opportunities while improving all Port facilities.
During my time as Commissioner, we’ve saved taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars by building docks in-house, a service now extended to other municipalities. We also handle much of our electrical and renovation work internally. We navigated the challenges of collapsed boat sheds and now have new covered facilities, completed by our talented Port staff.
Looking ahead, the next six years will see important leadership transitions, with both the Port Auditor and Executive Director positions likely changing. Consistent leadership at the Commission level will be vital for a smooth and effective transition, safeguarding the Port’s stability and continued progress.
Beyond personnel changes, the Port has complex projects in development, including a hangar field expansion, increased boatyard capacity, and additional slips at Ship Yard Cove Marina. We will continue supporting the island business community through our leases and leadership.
Our Executive Director and staff excel in their daily operations, providing a positive experience for residents and visitors. I seek the opportunity to continue supporting their important work. My experience and understanding of the Port’s operations provide the steady leadership needed during this period, allowing us to continue serving our community effectively and preserving our unique island way of life.
